Hot Hot Heat effectively broke up for the first time after the release of their 2010 LP Future Breeds, later reuniting in 2016 for a self-titled album they promised would be their final goodbye. But here we are, in the year of our lord 2023, with a new song from the Vancouver band that helped define the indie sleaze era.
"Shock Me" marks the quartet's first new track with guitarist Dante DeCaro since 2005 — the year he left Hot Hot Heat and joined Wolf Parade — and likewise reunites vocalist/keyboardist Steve Bays and drummer Paul Hawley with bassist Parker Bossley.
More than 20 years on from Make Up the Breakdown, it sounds like they haven't aged a day in the best possible way. Perhaps un-shockingly, "Shock Me" is a synth-heavy dance-punk number and a delightful little Meet Me in the Bathroom-age time capsule. Hot Hot Heat, indeed, still rip.
